Beach Haven
Beach Haven is the “Queen City” of Long Beach Island. Known for a history of hosting coastal living accommodations, Beach Haven Haven is a mix of commercial and residential use real estate making for easy access to shops, amusements and eateries of all kinds. Many of the historic homes you will find in Beach Haven are the result of the Quaker influences of the early settlers of the mid-1800s. Wealthy Philadelphians traveled by boat to partake in hunting and fishing expeditions prior to Beach Haven receiving it’s charter in 1874. The Pennsylvannia Railroad Company made traveling from Philadelphia to Beach Haven easier with the completion of the railway in 1886. It as during this time that home building in Beach Haven took off. The homes that were built were designed with a Queen Ann style architecture. The Queen Ann style home differed from the Victorian designs we tend to use in describing the Queen Ann. The Queen Ann style can be distinguished by the way porches are support with columns, the installation of bay windows and most noteworthy is the turrets that set them apart for the Victorian style architecture. It wasn’t until 1914 that the railroad was replaced with a draw bridge that connected the mainland to the island opening the island up for year round living. There still exists homes along the roadways of Beach Haven that embody the Queen style. This is what separates Beach Haven from some of the other Long Beach Island communities. While fishing remains a favorite past-time, hunting has been a long lost love for many old timers. And the hunting grounds have been replaced with the amazing community of today. The Wharf is the center of activity in Beach Haven, with it’s shops, eateries and amusements. The family fun activities are what draws people to Beach Haven each year. Once a thriving year round community, Beach Haven has seen many homes return the glory days when the Quakers from Philadelphia built their vacation homes.
